Defeat at Anfield

5 month(s)

Real Madrid were defeated by Liverpool at Anfield. The Whites conceded both goals in the second half, with both sides missing penalties. Ancelotti's side started strongly and employed a compact set-up. This prevented the hosts from attacking at pace and they were forced to conduct long periods of possession to create chances. The Premier League side had an early sight of goal after four minutes when Darwin Núñez's shot was pushed away by Courtois, but it hit Asencio and the home-grown player then made a great goal-line clearance.

Midway through the first half, and after a series of rebounds, Núñez crashed his shot into the body of a brave Courtois. The last two chances were headers in quick succession. The Uruguayan striker's header grazed the post in the 33rd minute and Luis Diaz's 34th-minute effort was pushed away by the Madrid goalkeeper. The second half began in the worst possible way. Liverpool took the lead after 51 minutes with a goal from Mac Allister.

Things went from bad to worse when Camavinga limped off with an injury. However, Madrid had the chance to equalise nine minutes later. Lucas Vázquez was brought down inside the box by Robertson and the referee awarded a penalty. Mbappé fired the spot-kick to the left of Kelleher, who guessed right and pushed the ball away. From a possible 1-1 scoreline it was almost 2-0, again from the penalty spot after Mendy brought down Salah on 70', but the Egyptian striker fired the penalty off target. On 76', Gakpo sealed the win with a header from inside the six-yard box. The Whites attempted to reduce the deficit, but Lucas Vázquez’s strike from outside the area and Brahim’s close-range shot were saved by the Liverpool keeper.
